    New Year’s Goals

We’re almost 2/3 through this year, and it’s certainly had its ups and downs. But this week I actually met a goal. For years, I had set a goal of reaching 200 lbs, and never succeeded in reaching it. But this year I was really making sure to eat more, trying to sleep more, and — at the advice of a friend — starting to pay attention to food labels. A new group of people started coming to my gym, too, when theirs closed, and some of them are really motivating. Anyhow, when I got up yesterday morning, the scale read 200 for the first time ever. I am completely psyched — and ready to shoot for 205. It might take me years, but I won’t quit trying. Enjoy the end of summer! @EverHopeful
  3. Good morning, Fellow Rochesterians. I hope that you’re all off to a great 2023. I just finished my first workout of the New Year, and was reflecting on the past few years. I looked back at a post I had made of New Year’s Resolutions from 2020, and I am happy to say that I managed at least some of them, namely trying to incorporate foundational exercises like dead lifts and squats into my routine. I think I have had some success as a result, though the last year was a crazy one for several reasons. This year I am setting a goal of making my lifestyle healthier by getting an extra hour of sleep each night and paying more attention to meals. I know this is dull stuff, but I also know that I tend to neglect it, so I am making it a focus. I am also going to make it a point to post my progress more often, either here or in Discord. The community on this website is so supportive. I want to use everyone’s positive energy to help me on my own journey, and to send my positive energy on to others, too. I wish everyone the best, and look forward to everyone’s progress! —— @EverHopeful

    Dating

Hello Rochesterians! I figured I’d give this a go as I’ve not had much luck on dating apps. I’m looking to meet a muscle man to see if there’s connections. Besides muscle, I enjoy movies and tv, hanging out, d&d, Disney, Schitt’s creek, and having fun. I’m 25, 5’7, 135 and wouldn’t mind becoming more active.
  5. VRGoh

    Winter is coming . . . .

I always say that, at the end of the year, the Starks are always right. (Game of Thrones fans will know what I mean) As for New Year's resolutions, I'm continuing to work on my mental health, as that has been the heaviest thing I've been dealing with these days. Once that's managed, I'll tackle the rest.
  6. Hello, Fellow Rochesterians. I was thinking of the line from the beginning of Moby-Dick, “whenever it is a dark and dreary November in my soul” this morning. And then I saw the weather forecast for this evening, and it looks like we’re getting our first snow. Summer and autumn have been glorious, and I hate to see them go. But I know that as we all adjust to living more of our lives INSIDE, we sometimes lose the enthusiasm we had for working out (short sleeve weather is behind us now). I am going to try not to slack this year, but to see winter this as an opportunity to do better in my fitness goals. I have been really consistent with my training for the past few months. I’m going to now try focusing on eating consistently, too — which I have never done. I am making my new year’s resolution early, I guess, and when we DO go back to short sleeves in the spring, my goal is to be 5 pounds heavier than I am today. I think that’s realistic, and I think I can put on 5 pounds of muscle, not fat, if I really pay attention to what I am putting in my mouth, and how much of it. Someone suggested I learn about macros, so that’s my plan — to learn about that, and then to live it. Are any of you other Rochesterians setting goals? This club is all about encouragement and support. If you need a cheerleader—or someone with a cattle prod—let us know, and we will be there for you. The club has been quiet lately. Let’s see a little more activity. Take care, and have a great week ahead. @EverHopeful
  7. I hope you made it back, @VRGoh Congratulations on your second shot. I am on my summer vacation, and my challenge is going to be working out in places that may not be fully open. This week, though, I got a membership in a huge gym in Fredericksburg, VA. I feel like I need a GPS to get around in it, but I have had two good workouts so far, and I am starting to get used to it. The big challenge for me will come next week, when I may be in Canada. I am not sure gym’s will be allowing guest memberships, even if they’re open. But I guess I will cross that Rainbow Bridge when I get to it. Happy Summer! Let’s keep motivating one another. @Trekka, your text messages the other day came at the exact right moment. Be well, all, and keep at it! — David
  8. That would give me an excuse to come back to the gym, though I'll be wearing the mask for another week, since my second shot was a week ago yesterday as of this posting.
  9. @Trekka is right. You just need to start. I noticed this week with the new CDC guidelines going into effect Wednesday, I saw many more people at the gym than I usually do. In some cases, people were just starting back after a long winter’s nap. In other cases, the people coming back had obviously been working out somewhere (home gym?) because you could tell they were still in top shape. But whatever the situation, everyone was very happy to be back in their old familiar second home. Some still wore masks, because they are not yet fully vaccinated, and at least one guy who loudly brags that he will never get vaccinated (because it’s an attempt by “them” to control us all) was NOT wearing a mask, but every one was peacefully co-existing, and you could see real joy on a few faces when folks realized if they had been vaccinated, the mask was optional. I’ve learned that, this week, pieces of equipment that have been off the floor to allow for more distancing will be making their return, and that’s another cause for celebration. If you’ve been hesitating about coming back, use the weather as an excuse. Summer is coming, and that means sunshine and short sleeves. You will feel SO GOOD after your first workout, you’ll forget you ever paused (until the next day, when you will feel it. Oh, will you feel it.) Come on, Rochesterians! Listen to @Trekka Just start. @EverHopeful
  10. Well, we have made it....here we are a few days away from when things started going off the rails in a big way in the US. Here in NY March 13th was the Friday that marked the transition into lockdowns and many months of a strange new world, one without our favorite place, the gym. Even after the gyms reopened it was hard to reestablish what was once a fairly consistent 6 day training cycle. It wasn't until Christmas that I was finally able to build a new, fairly consistent training cycle but less than the days I had previously. Thankfully, I had started making some changes that, for me, really improved the effectiveness of each workout and I feel better about things than I have in a while. The biggest piece of getting the iron back on track is simply getting back to ones training. You likely won't start back where you left off, and that is ok. Just start. Rebuild yourself lift by lift and know you will get better over time, get back to what you had and then push yourself into new territory. It will happen sooner than you realize, but you just need to start. If any of you plan to try or are using Knockout Fitness, let me know, I'm happy to offer encouragement and help you get moving again.
  11. On Monday, the area where I live, work, and go to the gym was designated an orange zone, and one of the restrictions imposed was that gyms must close. When gyms closed in March, I think I did a pretty good job with adapting to a home workout routine, and I kept at it for the 5 months that gyms were closed. I was so happy when they re-opened in August, and it felt so good just to be able to use some of those machines again. How I had missed them! Rather than grumbling about something I have no control over, I am going to get back to my home workout schedule, and — in the spirit of Thanksgiving — I decided to enumerate some of the advantages that there are to working out at home. 1. Complete control of the music playing in the home gym. If I want to listen to Christmas music, AND I MIGHT, by golly, by holly, this gym will be blasting Christmas music. 2. No mask requirement. I never found this restriction too onerous, but twice I had to get in my car and go back home to pick up the mask I had forgotten. Never an issue in the home gym! 3. Don’t have to shovel snow to get to the gym, if there’s bad weather. I don’t have to put on boots, a heavy coat, anything. I can just enjoy the beauty of the snow while I work out inside. And listen to Christmas music. 4. No need to wipe down equipment with sanitizing wipes before and after use. And if anyone reports me to the manager of the home gym, he will probably just turn up the Christmas music and ignore them. 5. No lines at any of the equipment. Sure, I may have to push my cat off the flat bench from time to time, but it’s so much better than eying someone from across the gym who is using the one piece of equipment I desperately want to use. 6. No worries about social distancing I usually went to my gym at 5 am because that’s when it was quietest. A lot of the time, would be the only one there then. In the home gym, I can work out at 4 pm and I will still be the only one there. I’m doing my part, Dr. Fauci. 7. No problems trying to locate the set of dumbbells I need. As much as I love my gym, it seems as though some of the people who work out there have no idea that it’s actually a good idea to re-rack each dumbbell next to its respective mate, and to arrange these in sequence in the racks. This is not an issue in the home gym! There are not that many dumbbells to begin with, and it’s as if the person who works out here has a mild case of OCD, because they are always in the exact same place. 8. I can work out without a shirt if I want. The home gym is the ultimate No Judgement Zone. I can wear anything I want. Or not wear anything I want. 9. No difficult choices. At the gym I would go to, I would sometimes have to think. Which bar to use? Which grip? Which leg extension machine? At the home gym, it’s one size fits all. Or as Mom would say, “You’ll eat what I put on your plate, and you’ll like it.” Not having to choose can be so liberating. 10. I can develop an increased appreciation for my non-home gym, so that when it DOES re-open, I don’t take for granted any moment I have the chance to work out there, I don’t forget to treasure every wonderful machine and piece of equipment the owner has assembled there, I don’t fail to show my gratitude for every masked “Good morning” greeting and head nod from a fellow morning person. It’s a gift having the opportunity to work out there, and not being able to have it for a brief bit will only make it more precious. Rochester friends, I wish you well in this second closing. Keep up your hearts and your heads and do the best you can, and I will see you all on the other side! — EverHopeful

    Hiking for cardio

My travel plans fell through, so I have been in each morning this week at 5:00. In fact, I was the biggest guy in the gym today from 5:00 till 5:30. I was also the *only* guy there, but whatever. I love a quiet gym. I don’t have to share my toys with anyone!

    Hiking for cardio

I would love to say, “See you there,” but I *might* be able to travel this weekend, and if I can, it will be a while before I am able to resume in the early a.m. At 6, it has been very quiet, but there are the regulars, and early morning is my favorite time of day to train.

Thank you for the mention, Zack told me as well. So hopefully I will start doing some early am lifts.

    Hiking for cardio

Hey, @Trekka Just so you know, I heard Zach tell someone that beginning Monday, the gym will open at 5:00 a.m. I know you were hoping to get in earlier. I have been going at 6:00 a.m. and it's not busy at all.
  16. I really don't enjoy treadmills and most cardio machines, but I will gladly go out for an hour or more and climb trails and hike trails through nearby parks. Does anyone else enjoy the time in nature? I have a couple of friends who I can generally hike with but I would like to find others who are likewise interested. Let me know if anyone would want to join. I generally prefer trails with elevation changes and keep to a pretty decent pace. Maybe you want to jog it, that would be cool too. At this point it may only be weekends until the gym opens earlier and there is time after work during the week.
  17. Hey MuscleLover, Everyone should find someone who they fit well with. I applaud you for using every avenue that you are comfortable using. One thing that is often important, in my view, with regards to finding people to spend time with are mutual interests. Think of this as writing a resume for finding a friend or maybe something more if you connect well. Having said that, I was curious if there are any fitness related activities you might enjoy as well. The reasons I ask, there are a few, one to bump up the thread, to hopefully get some engagement with others for you, and maybe help you elaborate and garner more interest. As this is a forum related to muscle, physical activities that can be shared might help you begin to connect with someone, even if you don't actually want to lift. I love hiking for example and am still trying to hit the trails. So I am always looking for (and will be posting a topic regarding that shortly) others to join with. Just a thought and I do hope you are successful in your search. Scott (Trekka)
  18. I just thought I would bump this thread and see how you were doing. Have you gotten back to the gym? I have been going, training by myself right now. My schedule has been tough due to hour changes vs the pre-COVID hours and work has been taking most of my energy. Last week improved a bit but I am still not as consistent as I'd like. I'm accepting of the mask, it's like forced high altitude training, so I kinda like it, find it fun. Still trying to hike as much as I can. I talked with Zack today and he intends to start earlier hours soon. I'm hoping to start lifting before work and then get some hiking time in after work. I look forward to hearing your update, no matter what it is.
  19. Hey everyone. So I know this isn't lifting related, but I figured I'd give it a shot. I'm looking to meet a guy and go on a date and it maybe turning into something more. I've tried many dating apps, with no luck. I am 24yo, 5'7 average build. I love watching movies and tv, fav show right now has to be Schitt's Creek. I'm a huge Disney nut and am just looking for a big strong prince charming. I know it's harder to date right now with COVID-19, but I get lonely and just want to put myself out there and I figured by searching in the muscle community, I may strike gold, who knows. I hope to hear from someone, if not if you know someone, just thought I'd try.

    New York Gyms Re-Opening

Ironically I actually visited World on East Ave, Saturday. Knockout closed earlier than I could get there. I haven't been to that World in a few years and I don't really feel that it has changed much. It's a decent gym but I wasn't as happy with my workout than if I had been at Knockout. Due to a permanent issue with my right arm I like certain equipment which World didn't have. I suggest that you try both and see where you feel more at home. Knockout is it for me. Having said that, I do also like Samson's Powerhouse, but their hours were short on the weekend before COVID and I don't know what they are now. Although close to work for me, I like a little downtime after work before I lift. That is very much an old schoolers paradise. You can feel the muscle building there and it's generally a serious gym to train at, similar to Knockout. I am sure World at all of their locations are, the Greece location seemed to have a serious crew when I have visited there. I haven't tried Webster but that might be the most serious and that location is 24/hr access. I'd consider a membership there or Powerhouse as a second gym but I'm saving my money for other things right now.

    New York Gyms Re-Opening

First of all, welcome to Rochester, @TimelessStrength, I hope you’re going to like it here. I can’t give you a review of World Gym, because I only toured it once, and that was many years ago. I know a number of people who go there and like it, but it’s not the place for me. The site was once a bowling alley, I believe, and it has a big, open feel. Lots of equipment, and also offers classes, tanning, child care .... It’s part of a big chain and has many amenities—whether those are at additional cost, or even if they’re offered at this stage in our Coronavirus response, I do not know. Knockout I love. For years, I hadn’t even considered it, because I had assumed it was a boxing gym, and so I was quite surprised. It has all the basic pieces of free weight exercise equipment I would ever need, as well as a number of other machines — treadmills, ellipticals, and other Fancy Thingamigs and Dodoobies. No tanning, no classes, no child care, but clean and everything is in good shape. The people there are nice, too. You’ll see people in all shapes and sizes there, and it seems comfortable for everyone, no matter what their goal is. At present, a number of pieces of equipment have been moved to a “time out corner,” because they’ve needed to space everything out to be in compliance with COVID guidelines, but I’ve still been able to get in really good sessions since they’ve reopened, and have been more grateful just to be able to train in a real gym than regretful that, say, the side lateral shoulder raise machine is out of commission. I would recommend if you’re interested, to call and arrange a visit when you could train there, and you’ll see if it’s the place for you. If you like locally owned gyms, it might be a good fit. — EverHopeful And, P.S., I like your screen name!

Could anybody give me reviews of both Knockout and World Gym? I’m moving into the area and those two stand out. I like Samson’s too, but it’s a bit too much travel to and from for me for now.

I have been going at my more usual 5ish pm, not crowded but early in the week is still busier than later in the week. I may move my gym time around for that reason, and try going later. Just so it's as few people as possible. I'm still trying to keep up the hiking which has been a source of enjoyment. If anyone wants to join, message me direct. Right now it's weekend mornings, and a few weekday evenings. I hope you are all going. Say hello if you see me there.
